  1. Name: Portuguese Republic. Capital: Lisbon.National Day: June 10th
  2. Geographical location: located in Southwestern Europe, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and west of Spain.

  4. Climate: Oceanic temperate zone, cool and much rainy in the north, warm and dry in the south.
  5. Population: 10,566,000 people (estimated in 2002).
  6. Terrain: mountains in the north of Tagus River, undulating plains in the south.
  7. Natural resources: fish, forest, wolfram, iron ore, uranium ore, marble.
  8. Natural disasters: The Azores is often affected by strong earthquakes.
  9. Environmental issues: soil erosion; air pollution caused by industrial waste and vehicles; water pollution, particularly in the coastal area.
  10. Regime: Parliamentary democracy.
  11. Constitution: passed on April 25th, 1976, revised in several times (30/10/1982, 1/6/1989, 5/11/1992, 3/9/1997).
